HISTORY OF THE CIRCUIT

The F1 Grand Prix in Baku was first discussed in 2013. Azerbaijan finally saw its first F1 race in 2016, and since then the Grand Prix has been held here annually only ever closing for one year in 2020. In 2016, the local race was known as the European Grand Prix, and since 2017 it has been known as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The Baku street circuit features a mix of long straights, narrow sections, and tight corners, making it one of the most challenging circuits on the Formula One calendar. Having more than 6 kilometres the circuit has a unique layout that includes a narrow uphill section, a tight castle section, and a long flat-out section along the promenade.
